Ipswich Town Football Club sold out their stadium this evening for the first time in years.
Portman Road capacity is 30,311. Given that Ipswich Town is the biggest football team in the county of Suffolk, the average attendance for 2015/16 was a dismal 18,989.
It was rather strange as the match was a regular Championship game versus Derby County. The reason behind the full capacity crowd is thought to be down to a misprint on a local pub’s poster that advertised the Lincoln vs Ipswich FA Cup match on Tuesday 17th January.
As you can see, the poster also was advertising a comedy night but the text, images and dates were accidentally mixed up.
A large crowd attended the pub expecting a comedy night but were disappointed to learn of the printing error. The pub apologised and offered a free drink.
The comedy crowd’s disappointment didn’t last long. It might as well of been a comedy night as Mick McCarthy’s men put out a hilarious performance and lost to Lincoln City, a club in the Conference Premier.
It is thought that, by word of mouth and social media, the Suffolk comedy scene was made aware of the laughable football team and wanted a live performance.
The stadium was packed to the rafters, with most of the crowd expecting a live comedy performance. Again, they were not disappointed. The Ipswich players pulled out all the stops and were keen to impress the new crowd, they went three-nil down before the half-time whistle.

A poor second half performance by Ipswich saw the game stay at three-nil to Derby County.
This didn’t spoil the night for the audience though, a man leaving the ground said, “Amazing! Embarrassing and cringeworthy comedy at its best! Ipswich are the David Brent of the football world!”
Another spectator said, “Flipping brilliant! Haven’t seen anything funny since the video “Charlie Bit My Finger” ten years ago! If Ipswich Town were a geographic landmark, they’d be a massive lolcano.”
Some other audience members, who were wearing Ipswich replica shirts, were seen crying. I can only presume that they were still crying with laughter 20 minutes after it had finished. What a show it must of been, things looking up the Tractor Boys!
